How To Use the Canon AE-1

  1. Load the film into the camera from the back by pressing the dial on the left.

  2. Take the lens cap off, revealing the lens.

  3. If there is sun, invert the lens shade to block the sun from the lens of the camera. If not, remove it.

  4. Frame your subject by looking through the viewfinder.

  5. Adjust the focus using the lens ring.

  6. Adjust the exposure (speed of shutter how fast it closes). To do this, hold down on the lock release button and slide the film speed lever to the speed of your choice or until it aligns with the green index.

  7. The outer ring on the lens is for adjusting how long the shutter stays open.

  8. The dial on the top right is for adjusting how long the shutter stays open.

  9. Once ready, pull the lever on the top right back, which turns the film on the inside to get to the next shot.

  10. Push the black button to take the picture.

  11. Use the knob on the left to unroll the film and send it to a lab to be developed when the film roll is finished. To replace the film, pull up the rewind knob to make the back pop open. If this is your first film cartridge, remove the insert. Place the film in the cartridge and push the rewind knob, turning until it drops to a normal position.

  12. To check the battery, turn the main dial to “A”. Press the battery check button. If the beeps are fast, you have enough battery power. If they are slow, replace the battery.

  13. Enjoy your AE-1 pictures!
